Weirdos, that’s why. Bloody weirdos!
Inside one of the hotels here is a famous bar called Duke’s. Duke Kahanamoku was a famous Hawaiian surfer, although he did win Olympic gold in swimming! You can read more about him here.
Anyway, it is always really busy so today I ventured to the bar…mistake, bloody big mistake! I’m sitting quite the thing waiting for my burger. There is an empty seat on each side of me so when the guy comes to ask if anyone is sitting I move, no bother so he and his friend could sit down. He felt the need to converse as follows.
“You have an accent”
“So do you”
“No I don’t. You’re Australian aren’t you?”
“No.” Hurrah – my food arrives and I think I can get on with my lunch/dinner.
“That looks good. What is it? Where are you from then if it’s not Australia?”
“Scotland” I turn further to my left, I just want to sit and eat, why can’t I just be left alone?
“TomAto Tomato. (Silence from me) It means same difference”
“No shit Sherlock” The look of confusion on his face was hilarious so he goes back to talking to his pal (as he should, not to me)! I relax a bit – haha, I should have known better. He turns into Dory:
“Where are you from?”
“Scotland.”
“Where do Scottish people normally go on holiday. What island? Hawai’i is too far to come”
I was honestly thinking of getting another glass of wine but all I wanted to do at this point was to pay up and ship out – I was so uncomfortable. Why on earth don’t people get it – I do not want to talk to you!!
I quickly shoved my cash towards the bartender and hopped off my bar stool, “the world is a wonderful place to explore – nowhere is too far”.
I legged it.
There are plenty tattoo places here, I think I might get “I don’t want to talk to you” tattooed on my forehead!
I do have another post coming shortly on my trip to Pearl Harbor too – there are also daft folk coming up in that post!
