Houston – you have a problem

My 28th state – I think! I need to take time and double check that, but for now, we’ll say it’s 28. I’ve had a plan ( of sorts) for years now that I want to visit all 50 states. When I told a few people I was visiting Texas their response was “why?” I suppose I just think – why not? It is one of the 50 and it needs to be ticked off my list.

I’m currently in San Antonio where I feel a heck of a lot safer than in Houston. There was an incident in Houston (don’t worry mum, I’m fine) that just made me be a bit more wary. I’d walked to the aquarium thinking there would be things around there. No. So I bought a bottle of water $4.25 (why they charge so much for water in a place where you need it constantly sounds a bit daft to me) and saw it was only a five minute walk into the main area.

I was walking up to cross the road and clocked a man sitting on the wall. Nothing untoward with that, there were a lot of people sitting around but for whatever reason I’d specifically noticed him. The lights had unfortunately just gone for the traffic and so I had to wait. The first thing I noticed was the smell of alcohol right behind me and then he came to stand right next to me and was clocking my handbag. Now, it might just have been the pattern on it, but I turned and walked straight back the way I came. There were other people about so I don’t think I was in danger in any way, but I had to get myself out of that uncomfortable situation. Who knew that walking through a park (I could see the entry and exit at all times) would be safer than walking out in the open!

Houston was busy with football/soccer fans and I found a little place to have something to eat and watch the Scotland match on Friday night. Apparently a woman watching soccer on her own and getting ever so slightly wound up is just too much for some people! So you know, everyone staring got a friendly little wave or a hello from me before they quickly looked away! Trust me, I was not the one feeling awkward!
