A forced phone detox…

I’ve lost my phone!

I’m so annoyed, a bit angry and yet, still a bit hopeful.

We were in the Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad (BSAS) on Friday. It is a very cool and interesting building that has just gone through quite a major refurbishment. Have a wee look online.

I was wiaitng for Douglas on a bench having a wee nosey at my emails. Once he was ready I took a quick swig of my water and off we went to the shop and then crossed the road to have a look at the full length of the building and of course for me to take a picture! That is of course when I learned my phone was not with me. I was quite convinced I’d left it on the bench but well, 20 minutes or so had passed at it was no longer there. I asked everywhere and the fabulous Aishe at the BSAS is still on the case, corresponding with Douglas so you never know! I also have a lost property company on it and have a reference from the police in KL.

My Scottish folk will no doubt raise a wee smile when I tell you that the world for police in Malaysian is actually ‘polis’.

I know I rely on my phone way more than I should and this forced ‘detox’ has proved just that especially being away from home. I don’t wear a watch so having been using my laptop clock and adding seven. Mind you, now I am in Indonesia I need to just add six now…

I was in Singapore airport yesterday and it is such an amazing place. You could probably spend a week in Singapore and never actually leave the airport! So of course I wanted to take photos and videos of the waterfall, the water vortex, the plants, the butterfly garden and all the illustrated Moon Rabbits that have appeared since I was there 10 days ago or so. Alas, not real bunnies. However, S$65 later and I am in possession of a digital camera! Who remembers those? I don’t think the photos are up to much, but at least I have something!

How about waking up? I know lots of us use our mobiles as our alarm clock. Saturday and Sunday morning was fine as the hotel in Kuala Lumpur had a wake up call system. Not the usual one nowadays where you get an automated message – a real human wishing me a good morning! My phone certainly doesn’t do that! I do wonder if the alarm is still set – if so 7am KT Tunstall is blasting out somewhere in KL!

One time passcodes? Phone required. QR codes? Phone required. Online banking, weather forecasts, emails, and yes of course phone calls!

The one thing I was quite worried about was how on earth I was going to get round the QR code required to scan on arrival in Indonesia. I had it on my laptop, but I wasn’t sure how that would work/look getting my laptop out at the border when everyone else was scanning their phones, but this morning I had a bit of a brainwave – I just wasn’t sure if it would work but indeed it did – thank goodness for that trusty old fashioned digital camera. QR code scanned at the border without any issue and I am now safely in Indonesia!

I got both my passport and handbag back in Sydney, so keep everything crossed that I need to fly back to KL one day this week to retrieve my phone! That is money I would have no issue spending!

People say you need a smartphone and it is true that having one certainly makes my life easier, but none of us need to be attached to them 24/7.

  1. you are a bright girl I am sure you know this but is it an iPhone you have lost as you could locate that via your laptop?

You can locate your missing device right now by going to Find Devices – Apple iCloud or by opening the Find My app on another Apple device. [1, 2]
