Seventeen

Today Keith and I have been married for 17 years. Yeah, okay, we are “separated” but under Scots law we are still married. Seventeen years gift is furniture. He got it all, I got money for it.

I sent Keith a voicemail this morning and, to be fair I did get a message back. I’m not writing this for pity, or comments like “move on”, “you don’t need him” etc, etc. This post is for me and unless you’ve got something supportive to say, you don’t need to say anything.

I didn’t expect to be alone in Jakarta today, I thought I’d have support of a friend but hey, things never quite work out and, with nine minutes to go I’ve made it. I’ve made it through this first year without my husband. Technically we were separated in July 2025, but we were still living together until 4 October 2025. Funny isn’t it how some dates stay in your mind.

I had a long lie today but still got to breakfast with 28 minutes to spare. After sitting there for a while I decided to go to Pacific Place mall. I have no idea how many malls are in Jakarta and why, but it seems like one of the few things to do here in Jakarta!

I got back just in time for afternoon tea before retiring to my room and ordering a bottle of fizz. One of my friends once said “you should always have a bottle of fizz in the fridge just in case you have nothing to celebrate other than having a bottle of fizz in the fridge”. That seemed like very good advice today and, although I didn’t have any fizz in the fridge, thankfully the hotel did – yay!

I was just getting ready to open it, when I got a wee call from the spa saying I was late for my massage. The problem with not speaking the language is sometimes there is a bit of crossed wires. When those crossed wires mean you get two 90 minute massages over the curse of two days you take it!

I had a really good massage in Singapore which left bruises. Sounds weird I know, saying the massage was good but I was bruised, but the same happened today. Sometimes massages are really painful but required and today my thighs look like I have measles, but I promise it is just a really deep massage. The therapist today was amzing and dis tell me I was very “knotty”. Well, I’m going with knotty and not naughty!

Tomorrow evening I check out of my hotel here in Jakarta and head to Hong Kong. Would I head back here? No, I really don’t think so. Perhaps I should have dine more research about Jakarta but in all honesty i thought I’d have my friend here as tour guide,. Ah well things happen.

I have a late check out until 8pm tomorrow – maybe I’ll use those hotel facilities I have not yet used!

Oh look, on that note, it is now 0002 and I survived 19 September 2026. Funnily enough there was a wedding here at the hotel today – no wonder I hid away!

You are an amazing young lady and we’re so proud of you. Love that advice about the fizz in the fridge might need to take that on board 😂❤️

You’re a very strong young lady and we’re so proud of you and how you’ve coped with this difficult year. Love the advice about the fizz and might need to take that on board 😀

  3. Firsts are always difficult but you have got through it and you should be proud of how far you’ve come. Doesn’t mean there won’t be sad or difficult days in the future but in those times be gracious to yourself and remind yourself of what an amazing person you are. X

  4. As the “friend” I find it dreadful that you would say such things,

    But as always be well.

” can only imagine how sad a day it is for you today.

I am quite hurt what you said about being abandoned in Jakarta and I am sorry you feel this way. Again, not to labour the point but I did spend a not insufficient amount of time and money getting to KL & Jakarta. specifically, to see you;  I couldn’t spend any more time away from home and you knew I was restricted by the flights etc.

Being so near to Luken and not seeing him hasn’t been ideal for me.

Anyway, I do hope your onward journeys are wonderful; 2 differing Disney’s in one trip.

Look after yourself. You have come a long way”

    1. I’m not sure where you get the word ‘abandon’ from. You used that word, not me. It’s not in my post and yes, I did think we’d spend more time together in Jakarta. That first night when you said you’d be an hour with Alastair and then we’d do dinner in the mall and drinks but I didn’t hear from you until the following afternoon. Waiting around all night to hear for you was not fun for me. You posting this in my blog comments is surprising and really not the place for it.
