O’ahu

Yesterday, a few hours after my surfing lesson I took a wee tour around the southeast corner of the Island of O’ahu! I’ll admit I get very confused with the names of the Hawaiian islands, but O’ahu is the island with Waikiki and Honolulu and where the majority of the Hawaiian population live and it is the most touristy island!

There were six of us on the tour and oh my, the couple with the selfie stick drove me absolutely mad. Pushing other people to get out the minibus , tutting and scowling at me trying to get pictures of the historical info when all they wanted was the perfect photo – I’m not sure they could actually tell you where they were – all thar mattered was that snap!

Luis our guide was really interesting and a wonderful photographer – nothing was too much trouble for him!

When someone is so passionate about where they live, it is easy to also get very involved. The scenery was stunning. I never thought I’d say that Hawai’i reminds me of Scotland, but those hills, waterfalls and the fog covering the top of the hills reminded me of the Cairngorms!

I’m sure you have heard of the Hawaiian singer & Ukulele player Israel Kamakawiwo’ole, famous for recording Over the Rainbow. Luis played it in the van and again I cried! I wasn’t sure if it was the stunning scenery, the music and lyrics or my whole situation, but the words really spoke to me: Bing Videos

Please excuse me – I am exhausted and need to sleep – I will post more tomorrow!

So pleased you enjoyed the tour. Why go somewhere new if you’re not going to explore and find out more about the history and culture of the people. Am sure the tour guide appreciated your interest in his island. Enjoy the rest of your time in Hawaii xxx
